- This aesthetic trend originated on social media at the beginning of 2019, which then became viral as people began posting photos and videos of their own interpretations of the VSCO girl style. This term is only applied to girls, and currently no VSCO boys exist.
VSCO Girl
noun; compounding
A young girl who follows the 2019 aesthetic trend of wearing scrunchies, tube tops or Brandy Melville crop-tops, puka seashell necklaces, shorts, Birkenstocks, white Vans, and carrying a Hydro-Flask, Starbucks cup, or a polaroid camera.
Etymology : The word “VSCO” refers to a 2011 photo-editing app of the same name which allows users to edit and filter photos before posting them on social media sites. “VSCO” is an acronym (pronounced visco) for Visual Supply Company. “Girl” comes from the 14th century “gyrle” which originally meant a child or young person of any sex. The origin of this word is disupted, with some arguing that it goes back to Proto-Germanic and Proto Indo Eruopean roots, or that it comes from a large group of Germanic words that have roots beginning with a “g” or a “k” and ending in “r” as a diminutive suffix denoting any type of immature or young creature.
