Brozone

blending Adjective
A nonce word used in the phrase “the brozone layer” referring to the air at a party or a concert characterized by the smell of body odor and marijuana. It stands in direct contrast to the whiffs of fresh air one might get at one of these events; knowledge of the brozone layer only comes about through contrast with the fresh air.

This word relies on the ideas of bro culture, and the colloquial use of the word ozone, which technically refers to a type of molecule, to refer to the entire ozone layer in the atmosphere. Bro culture is associated with smells of body odor produced in mass in sweaty environments like parties, as well as smoking marijuana. The ozone is associated with a layer of air. By blending them, the term “brozone layer” refers to a layer of air that has smells belonging to bro culture. The use of bro to refer to certain smells, and the use of ozone to refer to the entire ozone layer can be seen as examples of metonymy.
Etymology : A blend consisting of the roots bro and ozone
Source : A comment from the friend who coined the word at an Arctic Monkeys concert, “We’re in the brozone layer now, and it smells like BO and weed.” October 12, 2018.
