Circlejerk

noun; compounding
A metaphorical description of a group of people whose beliefs are amplified or reinforced by communication and repetition among the group members themselves (similar to “echo chamber”).

Circle-jerk started from its original literal meaning of a group masturbation, then became a metaphorical description of an environment in which people only hear and accept opinions similar to their own, and their existing views are reinforced. Much like an echo chamber, a circle-jerk often rejects and exclude ideas from outside of the circle.
Etymology : Compounding, “circle” + “jerk”. Metaphor: sexually satisfying each other – reinforcing each other’s similar ideas.
Source : “…some genres of scholarly writing require an entire expected section of this kind of circle-jerking, called literature review.” (Harbeck, James. “What Exactly Is a Circle Jerk?” Slate Magazine, 21 June 2016)
