one who majors in a social science or humanities field, rather than a natural science or engineering field Slackadem is a play on the word academ. At Rice, students tend to shorten words having to do with academics. For a example, an electrical engineer is an “elec”, and organic chemistry is simply “orgo." Slackadem is a spiteful variation of ‘academ’ used by science and engineering majors, who feel like they are required to work much harder than academs.
Etymology : combination of ‘slack’ with ‘(ac)adem(ic)’
