713

zero derivation noun
the city Houston proper

This is a casual term used to refer to the city of Houston, not including the suburbs. This term is slang but would generally be familiar to anyone who would recognize the area code. This is a classic case of metonymy, as the area code associated with Houston has come to mean Houston. This term contrasts the term “281ers,” which is Houstonian slang for people from the suburbs of Houston. Although the same idea drove both word formations, one from Houston would not describe themselves as being a “713er,” and one would not refer to going to the Houston suburbs as “heading to the 281.” The 713 tends to be used in an affectionate manner, as a nickname for Houston, in contrast to the pejorative term 281er.
Etymology : The main area code for Houston is 713, and so it came to equal Houston by metonymy.
