W

noun initialism
a success or victory in a competitive activity: a win.

The term W meaning win (in its noun form) was formed from an initialism of win. It came into use in the sports community, then spread to other competitive sectors, such as video games, and is now widely applied to a variety of subjects. However, W cannot be used interchangeably with win in all cases. It is most commonly used in the phrases “took the/that W” or “got the/that W.” One would not say that their team “has five W’s” or “needs another W to stay in the tournament,” although it is likely that this extension of meaning will occur in the near future. W can also be shortened to dub or dubs by a clipping of the initialism, and can be used in the same context with the same meaning – dub is typically used in the phrase “took the dub” while dubs is typically used as an interjection upon winning something.
Etymology : from an initialism of win. Win from Old English.
