Git

noun possible blend
Git is used as another word for child.

The word git is mostly used among South Floridians in the urban culture. Most likely African Americans are found using this word. This is a more recent word that has become more popular over the past five years. The word git is now spreading along the Southern border of the United States with influence coming heavily from rap music. The term is used casually among people in conversation. It is not a term that evokes anger or feelings of disrespect.
Etymology : The word git may have evolved from the blending of the word kid and the old English word get. The word get is a noun that means offspring or child. The word get is a shortening of the word beget which may mean “to procreate”. Both the words get and beget are words dealing with children. Kid is a common word that counts as another word for child. It is possible that “git” stems from get. It may be a Latin /e/ weakening where the short /e/ becomes /i/.
