- The word is used mainly when talking about video game characters, especially characters that are able to take a lot of damage without dying. The word is a compound of the words “face” and “tank.” The “face” part of the compound uses synecdoche to refer to the character or person that is defending and the “tank” part of the compound compares the defender’s survivability to a tank’s survivability through metaphor.
