Webtoon

noun; blending and clipping
A webcomic. A story, specifically a comic published online, told through pictures and words. Due to the higher quality of technology, some webtoons may have attached music or allow viewers to comment on the story, allowing for more direct interaction between authors, illustrators, and fans.

The word “web”, as used for the internet, likely originated as a metaphor. The internet links pieces of information together in a network, which can be likened metaphorically to the way the different threads on a spiderweb are linked and interwoven and spread out. “Webtoon” is the name of the website which is slightly more phonetically pleasing than “webcomic”, which is probably used to distinguish and market the website. Typically only used by those who frequent the website
Etymology : A blending of “web” and “cartoon”. There is no obvious blend of “web” and cartoon”, so the last part of “cartoon” was kept, as it is the most recognizable part of the word. “Cartoon” is often also clipped to “toon”, often spelled “tunes”.
