Vaporwave

noun; compounding
A futuristic and surreal subgenre of electronic music that features themes influenced by the 80s and 90s musical style, imagery and culture.
 
The term “vapor” in “vaporwave” suggests a foggy, psychedelic and ethereal feeling conveyed by the style, and “wave” is a semi-standard suffix for certain styles of electronic music. Vaporwave music features heavy sampling and editing of music from the 80s and 90s. Vaporwave can also describe a visual aesthetics often characterized by the use of early Internet imagery and web design, Greek statues, symbols of capitalism and consumerism, Japanese characters and 3D-rendered objects.
