folx
noun; other word formation type creative respelling
People or a certain group of people, usually intended to be inclusive of member of marginalized groups, particularly transgender people. This term is a creative respelling of ‘folks,’ possibly in analogy to other gender-neutral terms such as ‘Mx’ and ‘Latinx.’ Though the original spelling ‘folks’ is already gender-neutral, proponents of the creative respelling suggest that it is intended to signal explicit inclusion of marginalized groups. Critics of the term suggest that ‘folks’ is already inclusive and the spelling ‘folx’ is a case of virtue signaling. Because the two spellings are indistinguishable when spoken aloud, they are mostly written in social media posts.
