- “I can’t believe they rescinded him over such a trivial offense."
rescind
verb (transitive); zero derivation
To take away an offer from someone, in which the individual is the object of the transitive verb. This meaning differs from the standard meaning, in which the object of the verb is the item being taken away. With this meaning, the offer being taken away is not mentioned explicitly in the sentence (the most typical offer being implied to be acceptance into a college).
Etymology : Zero derivation from the transitive verb ‘rescind’ with a shift in meaning from “to revoke [obj.– an offer]” to “to revoke [an implied offer] from [obj.– a person]”
