Gaslighting

trying to convince someone that something is their fault when it is not
 
When someone wants to deflect blame from themselves and blames another person that is not at fault, it is gaslighting. The word likely comes from the idea that lighting gas causes a fire and problem that was not already there. The person that is gaslighting is trying to cause an issue that does not exist.
Etymology : from compounding root words gas and light, add affix ¬-ing
