Zoom (2)

zero derivation; proper noun
video call application popular for online classes held during coronavirus pandemic

Zoom was an already existing word that meant move quickly. It is now used as the name of the application that allows large video calls. The name could have been chosen so people associated the platform with speed. The speed would allow real time communication as if people were in the same room together. The word is also quick to say, so it would be easy for consumers to remember and associate with the application.
Etymology : possibly from aviation sense of zoom for move closer to quickly
