Pog

adjective; noun; interjection; clipping; acronym
Describes something which is exciting.

Used most often in gaming streams on Twitch by the audience in the chat, but has become sometimes used verbally by the streamers themselves. Usage outside Twitch is typically jocular. There are many conflicting folk etymologies of the origin of “PogChamp,” which “pog” may be a clipping of, though I believe the following to be most likely. “PogChamp” is a nickname for a Twitch streamer who won a tournament of Pogs, the game from the 1990s. It comes from a blend of “pogs champion.” “POG” is an unrelated term which is an acronym for “play of the game,” which is the best play made during a round of a game. It’s impossible to know if people are referring to the clipping or the acronym when they say “pog.” Many believe that the “pog” in “PogChamp” is in reference to “POG” the acronym, but I believe there is more evidence that points to the “pog” in “PogChamp” being referencial to the game. “PogChamp” later became the name of an emoticon in which the same streamer known as “PogChamp” made an exaggerated surprised face, so people would use the emoticon when something surprising or exciting happened. Ergo, “pog” is either directly referential to “play of the game” or it’s a clipping from “PogChamp,” the name of the emoticon named after a Twitch streamer’s nickname from when he won a Pogs championship. As to why people on Twitch would say “pog” rather than “cool” or “awesome,” it likely originated as a way to mark oneself as a member of a community that either understood the in-joke of “PogChamp” (and then reference that joke) or understood the slang of “POG,” but as the use became more widespread, people probably said it because it sounded funny and new.
Etymology : Either a clipping of the word “PogChamp” OR an acronym for “play of the game.”
