- Agh, there's a mozzie in the room.
Mozzie
noun; clipping
A mosquito My roommate explained that she says mozzie because "mosquito is just too long." I think they also might say mozzie in Hong Kong because the Spanish word sounds strange and difficult to say to ears that are not accustomed to the language. She came to Texas knowing literally two words of Spanish. The diminuitive suffix in this case does not imply affection but the small size of mosquitos.
Etymology : Clipping of mosquito (from Spanish) + diminuitive suffix -ie
