An interjection used to get someone's attention I don't think Americans use this word often because it sounds so different from there accents. Few words use this sound. But this is acutally a benefit. The word is so distinctive that it is bound to get someone's attention, if not for the right reason.
 
Oi! Look at this.
Etymology : A nonsensical sound used because it is loud and distinctive.
