Floofiness

noun; derivation affixation; other word formation type novel creation
The quality of a bird being very fluffy when it puffs up its feathers to stay warm.

Instead of using fluffiness, an already existing word to describe bird characteristics, birders use floofiness. This word might be a shibboleth to determine if a person is really into birding or just an amateur.
Etymology : Adding the affix -ness to the novel creation floofy to indicate a characteristic of the bird.
Source : “In mammals, floofiness is largely a passive attribute, but birds engage in it as a matter of behavior.” (National Audubon Society 10/03/2020)
