Transcontinental Writer was trying to sound ‘hip’ or ‘cool’, by clipping the word in the manner in which many youth do in modern times. Rather than use the old-fashioned sounding ‘transcontinental’, he made it sound like an ordinary activity by shortening it to ‘transcon.’
 
Continental Airlines is opening its first transcon service using the new planes.
Etymology : Clipping of ‘transcontinental.’
