EROTOTOXIN

noun;
Material that causes sexual arousal such as pornography that some believe is harmful to a person. ('He's destroyed his life from years of looking at erototoxins.' The root 'ero' means physical or sexual love. It appears to take this meaning in this usage. 'tox' also takes its common meaning of 'poison'. The '-in' suffix is a noun forming suffix. The 'to' in the word appears to be filler, or possibly the result of a reanalysis of 'ero'. In either case, it does not appear to have a meaning. From similar words such as 'neurotoxin', which indicates a poison that attacks the brain, it seems likely that an 'erototoxin' affects physical love in some way. The context makes it clear that it brings about physical love rather than attacking it. The 'to' does not appear to convey any meaning. It may be a result of a reanalysis of words like 'erotic' and 'eroticism', where the 't' might be interpreted to be a part of the root 'ero' rather than just filler. So most likely the word is formed from this reanalyzed root, plus an 'o' for filler. 'tox' appears to retain its usual form and meaning when combined with the noun-forming suffix '-in'. The coiners of this word most likely wish to convey that they believe things like pornography are poisons that harm an individual. Rather than simply saying this, by using classical roots, the word sounds more scientific and credible. So while 'poison porn' might not sound believable, 'erototoxin' sounds much more respectable and credible. The educated connotations of using classically-derived words help lend credibility to the coiner's theories about the nature of pornography.

“...more study of erototoxins could show how pornography is not speech-protected under the First Amendment.”
Etymology : ['ero' physical love + 'tox' poison + '-in' N. The 'to' appears to arise from a reanalysis of the root 'ero' to include the 't' found in words such as 'erotic']
