- “I hate getting lamed!”
LAME
verb; zero derivation
To kill in a video game using tactics that are easy to use, but difficult to block or counter. ('Quit laming me and fight fair.') In video games, it is often common to shorten or clip phrases so that speaking does not distract the players from the game. For example, when a player's character is killed, he usually has only a few moments before his character reappears in the game. Thus, when he is killed by a move that he considers lame, it quicker to say, “I got lamed,” than anything involving 'lame' as an adjective. This is the most likely reason for the use of 'lame' as a verb. The derivation comes from the tendency to describe certain moves or techniques in video games as 'lame'. These 'lame' moves are usually easy to accomplish, and often leave the other character or characters with little chance to retaliate or escape from the 'lame' move. Instead of saying, “I got hit with a lame move,” players began to use 'lame' as a verb on its own to mean essentially the same thing.
