- Hey peeps, how’s it going?
peeps
noun; clipping
Friends. The word ‘peeps’ is a slang way of talking about one’s friends. Similar to most clippings, it was probably formed simply as a shorter and faster way to say peoples. It is interesting to note that although one might refer to one’s friends as peeps in casual conversation, one would usually never refer to them as peoples. It is unclear exactly why the word people came to be clipped to peep and used in everyday conversation.
Etymology : Clipping of peoples. [people < Anglo-Norman pople, people, etc ‘nation, subjects, common people, crowd’ and OF, MF pueple, pople, etc. ‘inhabitants of a country’ < classical L. populus ‘a human community, nation, animals, the populace, the body of citizens exercising legislative power.’]
