Hobo-chic

adjective; compounding
Definition: adjective that describes the new fashion that incorporates an almost homeless-like clothing appearance, including many layers of clothes that are often ripped and otherwise damaged. The look was largely inspired by the Olsen twins’ style. Hobo-chic Parsing: hobo-ch-ic Origin: I heard this word used in my Anthropology class in September of 2005. My teacher was recounting her experiences teaching at NYU where she encountered the Olsen twins on occasion in their peculiar clothes that reminded her and the rest of the students at the school of a hobo’s attire. Their shabby looking clothing, which in reality are very expensive, are layered and then re-layered again and cling to their emancipated bodies giving the appearance of a stereotypical hobo. Since then I have heard the word used in larger context to describe this style in general not just the appearance of the Olsen twins.

Usage: “ That blouse is frayed at both ends and the holes are so big that you can see right through them, if you pair it with 2 other shirts it will be a perfect hobo-chic outfit.”
