spooning

noun;
A usually not sexual act involving sleeping with a member of the opposite sex. Spooning is a word that has recently exploded in popularity that describes an act that is anything but new. The word derives from the semi-fetal position that two people assume when sleeping together, nested next to each other as spoons laying on their side might do. The act’s popularity rises from its more recent acceptance as something non-sexual and that is acceptable between people who are ‘just friends.’ (The act also has a verb form ‘to spoon,’ formed by zero derivation from the noun.)

I walked in on Mike and Melissa the other night, and it was really awkward. They were spooning in his bed.
Etymology : spooning. Metaphorical extension of the image of two spoons nested next to each other.
