crank

noun; zero derivation
Powdered, low purity methamphetamine. Methamphetamine is an especially dangerous drug because it is highly addictive, cheap to acquire, and relatively easy to make. As demand for the drug increases, the methods of making it tend to move in the ‘quick and dirty’ direction. Powdered methamphetamine, which has a high impurity content, is cheaper to make than crystallized methamphetamine, and can be transported easily because its powder form can be stuffed nearly anywhere. Smugglers have found that filling the empty spaces in automobile engines’ crank cases with the powder is effective because the immediate environment prevents drug-sniffing dogs from detecting it. This method of transport is common enough that the name crank has stuck to the drug.

It’s not surprising that crank use is spreading among young, Midwestern populations.
Etymology : crank. Metaphorical extension; refers to the crank case of an automobile engine.
