- Coca-Cola is a generonym for any carbonated beverage.
Generonym
noun; compounding
A brand name that has become the generic name for the product category it is in, such as ‘Coke’ or ‘Kleenex.’ Very often, a product is so widespread and common that the brand name comes to represent the category into which the product falls, and all of the other brands become generically known by the other brand name. This is demonstrated by Coke, Kleenex, Polo (shirt) and Nalgene.
