prag

noun; clipping
A man in prison who is recognized as the property of another, and for whom sexual discretion is no longer an issue. Interpretation of intended meaning It is difficult for me to broach this subject without encroaching upon academic standards of propriety, but I think it’s a good word, so I’m going to jump right in. A prag, in a prison community, is a man you have taken for yourself; no one else is allowed to touch him. Presumed reason for coinage As I have already noted, this word has a unique meaning; no doubt it was coined when the available terms proved inadequate; prisoners have plenty of time to come up with slang. I took note of this word for the first time while watching HBO’s excellent prison drama, Oz. I have never heard it elsewhere, but I must admit that it has become a part of my slang vocabulary. Notes This has a unique connotation. Bitch, for example, implies no long-term commitment. I suppose you could say that praghood is something like the prison equivalent of marriage, but it is not voluntary. That’s about all I can say without laughing so hard I lose the ability to type. The origin of prag is a mystery, but I would guess it is a clipping of pragmatic. After all, pragmatism is all one has in prison.

When a man’s your prag, he’s your prag for life.
Etymology : Clipping from PRAGMATIC (?), with usage as a noun.
