killer app

1. an application, i.e. a program, on a particular device, usually a computer or gaming console, so desired that people buy the console or computer hardware just to run the program The idea of a killer app is great for the gaming industry. For the launch of the Xbox in November of 2001, Halo was one of the most talked about and hyped games of all time. Because of how great it was supposed to be, many people made their decision of which new game system to buy based solely on the release of Halo for Xbox.
 
Halo is the Xbox’s killer app.
Etymology : From English killer (slang) ‘awesome’ and English app, clipping of application ‘program’
