To compress a computer file. Now that it's established, it's much quicker to say you'll zip a file than to say you'll compress a file. Not to mention words with "z" are always more fun.
Etymology : Zero-derivation, possibly a metaphor to stuffing clothes in a suitcase and zipping it up to compress them.
Source : A friend had a huge file to send me through email so he said he'd just zip it up first.
