- I don’t think I have a GAYDAR, or at least it never works properly.
Gaydar
noun; blending
An inherent sense that most heterosexual women have to distinguish whether a male is homosexual. Apparent meaning: Inherent sense that heterosexual women have to be able to distinguish whether or not a male is homosexual. It is the ‘radar’ that women use to determine if a guy is ‘gay.’ Type of word formation: Blend of ‘gay’ and ‘radar’. Possible reason used: student was looking for a way to express their inability to “detect” the sexual orientation of a person, as with a radar. The person was expressing their frustration with being unable to tell if someone was gay, and almost expressed a wish to have a physical radar that would tell them the sexual orientation of the person, so that they could avoid awkward sexual situations.
Etymology : [blend of ‘gay’ + ‘radar’].
