Verbally transmitted disease. Type of word formation: Acronym from ‘verbally transmitted disease’. Possible reason used: Used in a joking manner to express the fear that pre-medical students can spread diseases verbally. Also draws parallels with the term STDs, or sexually transmitted diseases.
 
Don’t talk to premeds; they have VTDs.
