phone tag

noun; compounding
The act of calling a person when he/she is not around and leaving a message, only to have the call returned when the original caller is not around. Sister could not get in touch with me after I had left a message on her phone. Makes fun of the situation of how it was now my turn to call her back.

It looks like we’re playing phone tag, so I’ll call you later.
Etymology : compounding from ‘phone’ and ‘tag’
Source : Message on phone from sister.
