noun; back formation
software that secretly gathers user information through the user’s Internet connection possible reason used: This is a word used by the high-tech computer speech community in order to give a simple name to something they have to talk about frequently. By making this word, the speech community frees itself from a more lengthy description to say what they mean.
 
Don’t use programs that contain spyware.
