search

verb; clipping
A search engine; an online resource for searching. This was derived through clipping, clipping the word engine from the end of the phrase search engine. Although the word search used as a noun was probably originally formed through zero derivation from the word search used as a verb to be used in the phrase ‘search engine’, this was probably not the order of derivation of the word search as a noun.

Search used as a noun appeared in the Houston Chronicle in an article on Microsoft’s efforts to usurp market share of the search engine business from Google. In the article from September, the author used the word ‘search’ in place of search engine.
