liger

noun; blending and clipping
An imaginary, magical creature created through the interbreeding of a lion and a tiger. A liger is a mystical creature, like a unicorn, and is a cross between a lion and a tiger. Hence, "liger" was formed through the word formation processes of clipping and blending. The li- of lion was blended with the -iger of tiger. The word was created by the script writers of Napoleon Dynamite as a joke to make Napoleon Dynamite’s character seem extremely crazy and odd. People often laugh when they hear of absurd animal combinations, such as a "cockapoo" (cocker spaniel mixed with a poodle). Thus, perhaps the purpose of creating this new word was solely to create an absurd, humorous animal.

A liger-- It’s pretty much my favorite animal. It’s like a lion and a tiger mixed… bred for its skills in magic.
Etymology : Clipping/blend of li(on) x (ti)ger.
