oreo

noun; analogy
an African American who characteristically adheres to the popular white culture of the time period, often betraying his or her own culture in doing so.

The term 'oreo' with reference to African Americans was formed via metaphorical extension. Since oreo cookies have a black exterior and white interior, this same physical association has shifted from cookies to people as African Americans who have personalities that conform to white culture are termed 'oreos'. The word is often times viewed by many African Americans as a derogatory term and carries with it negative connotations, and thus the term has undergone some pejoration.
Etymology : From the proper noun 'oreo' (referencing the cookies which have a dark chocolate outside and a white middle), the noun 'oreo' (referencing African Americans who appear black on the outside but characteristically have a white personality) was formed.
Source : My older brother's friend with reference to Barack Obama (October 2008). Quote:"Barack Obama is just an oreo, I don't think he stands for anything that black culture represents."
