- The term stems from the blending and clipping of the words 'liberal' and 'retard'. The latter of the two roots has undergone a semantic change via metonymy to come to mean 'stubborn' in the context of libtard. There is a negative connotation that is associated with this term and it is often used in a derogatory manner by conservatively minded people to refer to liberals.
