folksonomy

noun; blending
A classification system brought about by individuals' choices of tags for online content.

Usually the classifications are only consistent within a given website, allowing articles, posts, etc. to be searched for and sorted using the website's particular methods. Carries a connotation of amateur quality, and sometimes inferiority or unreliability.
Etymology : A blending of 'folk', from Old English 'folc' meaning people, and 'taxonomy', the biological system of categorization of organisms, from Greek 'taxis' meaning arrangement and 'nomie' meaning name. The blending is a result of the similarity of the categorization of online content to the categorization of organisms, but with the classification being done by average people instead of experts.
