single object of 'the family' especially used by a person in reference to his or her own immediate family
 
Going home for Thanksgiving, time for the fam fam.
Etymology : comes from 'family' where 'the' is added for special emphasis that one refers to a particular family, namely his or her own, or the family of the person to whom he / she speaks. 'Family' came to mean blood relatives in the 16th century. Before that, comes from Latin 'familia' meaning /household,' including relatives and servants, from 'famulus' meaning 'servant' which comes from unknown origin
