Palinsanity

blending; noun
The hype, excitement, and controversy that occurred after 2008 Republican Presidential candidate John McCain picked Sarah Palin to be his vice presidential running mate.

'Palin' obviously blends well with 'insanity' due to the letter overlap, but the key reason for its being coined was that McCain's picking of Palin was so unexpected and received with such varied emotions. It turned some into supporters, caused some to instead vote Obama or third party, and even aroused accusations that he picked her just because she was a woman and/or wanted to gain the Hillary Clinton supporter vote (exemplified by the Facebook group 'Sarah Palin is NOT Hillary Clinton').
Etymology : A blending of the name 'Palin' with the word 'insanity' (overlapping 'in') with 'insanity' being from 'in' meaning 'not' and 'healthy condition,' from M.Fr. sanité; 'health,' from L. sanitas; 'health, sanity,' from sanus 'healthy, sane.'
