LDR

acronym; noun
Long Distance Relationship

LDR is an acronym of long distance relationship. Although there are other things that LDR can stand for, like light dependent resistors, among the Rice community the primary definition is long distance relationship. The term is used to describe a relationship with someone who lives far away. The speaker coined the term because long distance relationship is a very long group of words to say. LDR conveys the meaning in a more concise manner. This acronym is commonly found across the Rice campus, but it is also used by others in the dating world. The term LDR, at least across the Rice campus, has a negative connotation because of the idea that a person should explore new things, including new relationships, when he or she comes to college.
Etymology : Long- from Old English lang or long Distance- from Latin distare meaning “stand apart”. The idea of standing apart can easily be transferred to being apart through metonymy. Relationship- from Latin relates meaning a person related. A relationship is someone with whom you have relations.
