"oh shit" route

compounding; noun
a route in football in which the offensive player stops his route, faking like he is receiving the pass, then sprints past his defender and usually receives a pass once he is wide open. This rout is also known as the stop and go.

This term was made from compounding “oh shit” and route. “Oh shit” comes from the fact that it is the phrase that the defender says when this route is run against them. The “oh shit” route is similar in form to the “oh shit” problem and other things that often receive a response of “oh shit”. The term is usually used by spectators when describing the route that an offensive player in football just ran. The speaker coined the term because there are many other names for the route, but the “oh shit” route seems to get the point across just as nicely, if not better, than all of the other names. This word is associated with football, usually flag football, players and fans that watch these games.
Etymology : Shit is an expletive used when something undesirable has happened. Route is the path that someone or something takes to get to a destination from Old French rute meaning path.
