dry-hump

verb; compounding
To simulate sexual movements with another while remaining fully clothed. The term dry-hump has become quite common with university students and it is slowly gaining acceptance. I believe that the term was originally used because of the metaphor between staying dry and having your clothes still on. However, the term is also a result of compounding with the other word hump. Dry-humping implies that while there is something going on, it is definitely not sex. Because of the fact that dry-hump is not equated with sexual relations, many people are not ashamed to tell others they were dry humped or that they did that with one individual. I believe that term was coined because it gives a sense of much more sexuality than saying that there wasn't any sex but kissing and touching. To dry-hump sets a clear mental picture of what is going on. Perhaps because of the growing STD problem, dry-humping is arguably becoming more common and less taboo than before and it is broadening it's use from adolescents to older adults as well. The term has also undergone a type of zero derivation from the word "hump" which originally meant lump, for it has become a common word and phrase: "to hump", "to dry hump".

He started to dry-hump me when we made out.
Etymology : dry-hump. From Dutch homp 'lump' + Old English dryge from P.Gmc draugiz 'dry humor'.
Source : Freshman female.
