WTF

220; acronym
Used to express strong surprise or disbelief, usually negative and juvenile The word is formed through the word formation process of an acronym. The first letters of What The Fuck where taken and became WTF, in which every single letter is said. Although each of the individual words is by no means new, the acronym itself being said out loud is barely coming into being. The phrase is most used by adolescents and college students. I believe it was originally coined because of how accustomed people are to writing it in emails, facebook, or AOL Instant Messenger. Having been used to seeing it as WTF, it has come into the language. Also, I believe it was used because it is a less blatant form of saying "fuck" which could be more appropriate in the presence of adults. The acronym has also lost some of its angry effect and "fuck" is arguably ameliorated through such a process (even though it is not clearly said).

WTF, why is my computer being weird?
Etymology : WTF. From individual words: what (Old English hwæt- 'who'), the (Old English pe- demonstrative pronoun) and fuck (Norwegian fukkah- 'to copulate')
