formasual
adjective; compounding
the level of formality between formal and casual. This word is used mostly by people who usually attend less formal events and are usually unfamiliar with the proper level of formality at some social function. It usually applies to certain social events such as low key concerts, special dinners, and receptions where jeans and a tee shirt would be considered as unacceptable, but one in a suit and tie would be considered overdressed. I heard this word for the first time before an orchestra concert some friends of mine were performing in. My roommate, a music major, told me that the event was "formasual," which I had never heard before. Since being a music major gave him better insight into the formality of attending the concert, he was able to accurately convey to me the formality of the venue via the word "formasual."
Etymology : English. Compounded from "formal" and "casual."
