- I’m going to look that up in Wikipedia
wiki
noun; derivation
a digital collection of information, accessible over the internet, that can be added to and edited by any user who views it wiki- is added to words to indicate that it is open to be edited by anyone who views it (wikipeida, wiktionary) and is also used as a noun to indicate a digital collection of things which are open to be edited by any user. To me, this is a new concept (having an online encyclopedia where anyone can make changes or add information) and it would seem that this word was coined to give a name to this conceptual model. Perhaps by borrowing the Hawaiian word for quick, the word indicated the quick nature in which the data can be edited by any user.
Etymology : Wiki borrowed from Hawaiian 'quick'
