Tank(2)

noun; analogy metaphor, extension
The player character in a group of player characters that are working together that has the most health points and the greatest armor and will usually be used to distract the group’s current combat-engaged enemy away from other less health point endowed members of the party. This is a metaphorical extension of the word ‘tank’. The player character is supposed to embody the fundamental characteristics of a tank: rigid armor, resistance to attack, and massive endurance. The metaphor may have come about due to the seeming visual that enemy attacks appear to slide off the tank’s armor, whether or not the character in game is wearing armor.

"The tank is getting his butt kicked; tell the white mage to start healing him or else we're all gonna die."
Etymology : The root word is tank.
