to make something an incentive or to make something appear attractive In the context, stock options are offered to make employees want to work hard and do well. The professor used this because it is a concise way of getting his point across and he was stumbling for the right word to describe the process of wanting to make something attractive.
 
Stock options are used to incentivise making one’s best effort for the company.
Etymology : incentive from Latin incinere 'to sound' + ise 'V'
