- I’m disgustipated!
Disgustipated
adjective; blending and clipping
Simultaneously irritated and disgusted to the point of exasperation. The meaning of this word is somewhat unclear; it seems to mean simultaneously disgusted and exasperated, or possibly disgusted to the point of exasperation. The source of the DISGUST root is obvious, although it is unclear where the –IPATED suffix comes from. Exasperated seems the most likely choice, as it sounds very much like DISGUSTIPATED and has the same number of syllables. The presence of “I” in the word makes irritated another candidate; however, it does not contain the “P” that is found in exasperated. It is therefore possible that this word is a combination of all three. The professor who used it wanted to demonstrate his shock at the class division over a seemingly simple physics question in such a way that it was both humorous and inoffensive to the class. He also probably wanted to avoid giving the impression that he was talking down to the students, i.e., wanted to sound like he was on their level. For that reason, he made up a word that sounds like other typical college slang words, instead of using an existing one.
Etymology : A blend possibly formed from the root DISGUST, the -I from IRRITATED and the –P from EXASPERATED, plus the adjective affix –ATED
