a highly competitive, cutthroat medical student who will do anything (ethical or not) to get ahead academically and to gain favor from his/her superiors.
 
The gunners at med school are so hardcore.
Etymology : possibly from comparison to a gunman, who takes down anything in his way. from Middle English, gonner 'one who works a cannon.' an agent noun from 'gun.'
